Seawall Erosion Repair: What Are the Causes of Erosion?

At times, even the most ingenious of human inventions cannot withstand the forces of nature. An example of that is seawall erosion and failure.

No matter how big or sturdy your seawall is, it’s natural that it will crack and give in to the pressures of strong ocean waves, landslides, or human activities over time.

Below is a short explanation of how seawall erosions happen, what causes them, and how you can use this knowledge to help you with seawall erosion repair.

What Causes Seawall Erosion?

There are several reasons why your seawall may be eroding. To get an accurate diagnosis and how to repair it, we’d recommend you to get an expert to look at it. However, here are some common reasons for seawall erosions for you to know.

There are several reasons why your seawall may be eroding. To get an accurate diagnosis and how to repair it, we’d recommend you to get an expert to look at it. However, here are some common reasons for seawall erosions for you to know.

1. Storms and Hurricanes

It’s no surprise that here in Florida, one of the most common causes of seawall erosions is the weather. When big waves from hurricanes and storms go over our seawalls, it causes the soil on the land side to expand. And when things start to dry up, the soil will shrink back up again.

The problem? All of this expanding and shrinking action will exert a force on the seawall and over time, it can cause the seawall to crack. This is also known as “hydrostatic pressure.”

2. Construction

If there’s a lot of drilling, excavating, or demolishing happening around you, that might affect your seawall. Every large movement that we make above or underneath the ground sends ripples of energy across the soil. And if there are a lot of movements going around you, then these vibrations can affect the alignment of your seawall and the soil around it.

This is not to say your neighbor’s construction is definitely causing your seawall to be compromised but it is something to watch out for.

3. Soil Erosions

There are many causes of soil erosions. Some of the most common ones are poor water drainage, soil acidity problems, loss of soil structure, and loss of organic matters.

To fully understand it all, you would have to look up each one. However, the main point we want to get across is that when soil erodes, it can create gaps and holes underneath and on the sides of seawalls. As a result, soil erosion behind the seawall and next to the seawall will happen.

Last but not least, if the seawall already had damage from previous activities but it was never fixed, it could be showing signs now. If this is the case, we highly recommend you to get an expert to come to look at it before it gets worse.

One of the biggest mistakes people make when they suspect or spot seawall damages is they put repairs off until it’s too late. If you suspect that a seawall is becoming eroded, it’s best to take care of the problem now before it becomes bigger and more expensive to fix.

You made a good point that heavy rains can be the fairly common cause of erosion. I’d like to focus more on the exterior of my home this year, especially my landscape design. Perhaps getting a seawall repair would be a good first step to take because I haven’t paid attention to it in a long while.

It’s good that you mentioned that a lot of construction in your area could possibly cause erosion that will mean your breakwall may need repairs. There’s been a lot of development around my neighborhood recently and I’m a bit afraid that they may have caused some erosion to occur, what with how much heavy machinery they used to build houses. I’ll have a specialist look around my property so they can tell me if I am in need of any breakwall repairs.
